Story by: I.K Adusei

2017 was a year after a crucial election in Ghana which saw the current President, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo sworn in for the first time as President of Ghana.
On 15th June that year, my wife gave birth to a bouncy baby girl and while celebrating this joyous news I had a call from the family head of a family in the Eastern Region of Ghana who had agreed to sell off their three-acre farmland to me. In his own words, he whispered, “Young man, please come over because the indenture for the land is ready for us to sign.”
I bought the farmland for GHȻ 3,500 which was almost USD $800 that year at age 28.
It was a cocoa farm with cocoa, plantain, and cassava intercropped in a large part of the farm.
I didn’t do much on the land until 2019 when I planted more plantain suckers and cocoa seedlings.
Since then, I have harvested an enormous number of plantain mainly for domestic use and have recently commenced the harvesting of cocoa on a commercial scale.
Fortunately for me, the owner of a cocoa farm whom I share boundaries with has sold her two-acre farmland to me for GHȻ 4,000 approximately USD $400 this year to increase my farm size to 5 acres.
Apart from this, there is a hidden jewel in acquiring these farmlands.
The hidden jewel is the real estate positioning of these properties. This farmland is within a fast-developing residential settlement within the Abuakua North Municipality, in the Eastern Region of Ghana, West Africa.
The land is about five minutes drive from Bunso Eco Park, one of the most patronized tourist centers in the Republic of Ghana, and 10 minutes drive from the University College of Agriculture and Environmental Studies (UCAES).
Lands that border my property now sell for GHȻ 15,000 (USD $1,500) – GHȻ 20,000 (USD $2,000) per plot due to the expansion of a Nursing Training School and Senior High School facilities just a few minutes walk from my five-acre property.
One of the hidden jewels in agribusiness is the real estate potential hidden in the farmlands purchased. With careful planning, timeous action, and the favor of God, many young people can have a greater share of the wealth of their countries.
Today, my five-acre land of 20 plots is worth, over USD $30,000 in a spate of five years without even lifting a finger on real estate development.
Agribusiness is the new gold mine.
